Meet the Founder, Girts

Meet the Founder, Girts
On April 25, 2007 Girts passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones. His six year struggle with cancer was finally over. He was an inspiration to everyone that he met and he never let the fact that he was ill stop him from accomplishing whatever he wanted to do. He continued to sail every week and would schedule his chemo sessions around his sailboat races sometimes even sailing with an IV bag attached to him. He continued to work, play, and travel. Some never even knew he was ill. Girts never complained about his situation and always saw things in a positive light. He will be missed and remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father, doting grandfather and friend to all the knew him. Words are not enough to describe what a great man he was. We will miss our friend.

Sail Away
Sometime at eve when the tide is low,
I shall slip my mooring and sail away,
With no response to a friendly hail
of a kindred craft in a busy bay.

In the silent hush of the twilight pale,
when the night stoops down to embrace the day,
and the voices call in the waters flow -
sometime at eve when the tide is low,
I shall slip my mooring and sail away.

A few who have watched me sail away,
will miss my craft from the busy bay;
Some friendly barks that were anchored near,
Some loving souls that my heart held dear,
in silent sorrow will drop a tear -

But I shall have peacefully furled my sail
in moorings sheltered from storm and gale,
and greeted the friends who have sailed before
O'er the unknown sea to the unknown shore.
